How a replacement visit runs

From the quote to driving home

Every vehicle is a little different, so Impex explains the plan for yours when it quotes. This is the order the work follows.

  1. Send the vehicle and the damage

The quote form or a call: year, make, model, which glass is broken, and the VIN if you have it.

  2. The glass is matched

Impex checks the part against your VIN, so the glass that arrives fits your trim, sensors and mounts.

  3. A time and a place

Home, work or another spot with level ground and room to open the doors.

  4. Old glass out, new glass in

The old bond is cut, the frame is cleaned and the new glass is set in fresh urethane.

  5. Calibrate, cure, drive

The camera is calibrated when the car needs it, and you are told when it is safe to drive.

Repair or replace

When the glass has to come out

Plenty of windshield damage can be filled with resin and left in the car. Replacement is for the rest: the crack that has run, the break at the edge, the impact right where the driver looks. This site is about that second group. Auto glass replacement in Raleigh, NC, and in the towns east and south-east of the city, is what these pages walk through, in the order you will meet it: deciding, booking, the visit, the camera, the cure and the bill.

Size is the first test, but not the only one. ROLAGS, the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard run by the National Windshield Repair Division, treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable. It also sorts cracks by length: six inches or less is a short crack, anything longer is a long crack, and a crack that reaches the edge of the glass is an edge crack. Impex’s own guidance is simpler: repair can work when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges. Shops also pass around rules of thumb, such as a chip smaller than a quarter, or damage smaller than a dollar bill. They are rough guides, not rules. A technician has to see the glass.

Signs you are looking at a replacement

  • A crack that has reached the edge of the windshield, where the glass is bonded to the body of the car.
  • A long crack, past six inches, and above all one that grew overnight or after a cold start.
  • A break in front of the driver, where even a tidy repair leaves a mark you look through on every trip.
  • Damage in the patch of glass the forward camera looks through, behind the rearview mirror.
  • A door window or rear window that has shattered.

North Carolina’s annual safety inspection does not settle the question for you. Under G.S. 20-183.3 the inspection covers the wipers, not the glass, and no NC statute sets a crack size. That does not make a crack in your line of sight safe to live with. The Auto Glass Safety Council says the windshield and side glass are part of the passenger restraint system and must be installed properly for airbags to deploy as they should, and that the windshield helps keep people inside the car in a crash.

If price is your first question, our page on cheap windshield replacement in Raleigh, NC explains what moves a quote up or down and how a comprehensive claim changes what you pay.

After the new glass

Cameras, adhesive and the first day

Front crash prevention is now common. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 20 automakers, covering 99 percent of U.S. light vehicle sales, committed to make it standard, and its research found that forward collision warning with automatic braking cut rear-end crashes in half. These systems use cameras, radar or lidar, and many read the road through a camera mounted behind the rearview mirror, looking out through the windshield.

I-CAR, the collision repair training organization, says that forward facing camera controls lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control, and it lists removing the windshield among the events that may require the camera to be aimed again. Requirements differ by year, make and model, which is why I-CAR keeps a lookup tool for them.

Impex performs ADAS calibration on site after the windshield goes in. Its technicians complete static calibrations, with targets set in front of the car, and dynamic calibrations, where the car is driven at a set speed while a scan tool follows along, in one visit. Impex puts a calibration at between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Radar is a different part: it usually sits in or behind the front bumper or grille, so a new windshield does not by itself mean radar work. When radar does need it, Impex calibrates it on site, without a separate dealership appointment.

Then the adhesive. The Auto Glass Safety Council defines minimum drive-away time as how long a car should stay put after glass is installed so the bond can form, and says it depends on the adhesive and the weather at the time. Impex says a windshield replacement takes about an hour plus a short curing period, and most cars are back on the road within two hours. For the next 24 hours, skip the car wash and close the doors gently.

Paying for it

How glass claims usually go in North Carolina

In North Carolina, glass damage from a thrown stone or a falling branch normally falls under the comprehensive part of an auto policy. The NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass, and missiles or falling objects, among comprehensive losses, which are paid less any deductible.

Two points often get muddled. First, North Carolina has no law that waives the deductible for glass, unlike Florida and South Carolina. Some policies include full glass coverage, so read yours or ask your agent before you decide. Second, a comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. NCDOI notes that insurers may still look at how often you file claims.

You also decide who does the work. G.S. 58-3-180 says a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle must let the claimant select the repair service, and the insurer owes the same amount whichever one you pick. If an insurer recommends a shop, it has to tell you that you are under no obligation to use it. Impex works with all major insurance providers and, in its own claims guide, says it handles the claim process for you, with direct insurance billing.

East and south-east

Our side of the map: Johnston County and eastern Wake

Impex Auto Glass is based in Greensboro, with a second shop in Charlotte. Around Raleigh the work is mobile, and this site covers the side of the map where I-40, US 70 and US 64 leave the city heading east and south-east.

Take US 64 and US 264 east past Knightdale and Wendell and you reach Zebulon; our page on windshield replacement in Zebulon, NC covers it. Follow US 70 south-east into Johnston County and you come to Selma and Smithfield, where I-95 crosses it: see windshield replacement in Smithfield, NC and windshield replacement in Selma, NC. Down I-95 toward the I-40 junction sit Four Oaks and Benson, on our page for auto glass in Benson, NC. Every town is listed on the service areas page.

Those roads are busy with construction. NCDOT is widening I-95 from four lanes to eight over 26 miles, from Murphy Road at Exit 55 in Cumberland County to the I-40 junction at Exit 81 in Johnston County; work began in 2019. Closer to Raleigh, the first phase of Complete 540 opened on September 25, 2024, running about 18 miles to I-40 and US 70, and the second phase toward Knightdale is under way, with completion scheduled for 2028. Work zones and loaded trucks are hard on glass. North Carolina law requires trucks over 7,500 pounds hauling rock, gravel or stone to keep the load six inches below the walls and covered, because loose stone is a road hazard.

  • Your insurer and policy number, if you are claiming
  • Anything stuck to the glass, such as a dash camera mount

Questions

Questions about auto glass replacement

How much does auto glass replacement cost in Raleigh?

It depends on the vehicle, the glass and whether a camera needs calibrating. Impex quotes are fully inclusive, with no delivery, fuel or disposal fees added later. Send the form for a quote, and see the windshield replacement cost page for what drives the number.

Can the windshield be replaced at my house?

Yes. Around Raleigh the service is mobile: the technician comes to your home, your workplace or wherever the car is parked, as long as there is level ground and room to open the doors.

How long before I can drive the car?

Impex says a windshield takes about an hour plus a short curing period, and most cars are back on the road within two hours. Door glass usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and can be driven at once.

Does my car need calibration after a new windshield?

If it has a forward camera behind the mirror, it may. I-CAR lists windshield removal as an event that may require aiming the camera. Impex calibrates on site when your vehicle needs it.

Will my insurance pay the whole bill?

Only if your policy says so. NC has no law waiving the glass deductible, so comprehensive pays less your deductible unless you carry full glass coverage.

Does a glass claim add points in North Carolina?

A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no SDIP points. Insurers may still consider how often you claim.

Can my insurer make me use its shop?

No. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who repairs your vehicle, and the insurer owes the same amount either way.

Is Auto Glass Raleigh the business called Raleigh Auto Glass?

No. Auto Glass Raleigh is a mobile service of Impex Auto Glass, a North Carolina company based in Greensboro. It is not connected with other local businesses that use Raleigh in their names.
