Impex Auto Glass replaces windshields in Selma, NC, at the place your car is parked. Selma sits on US 70 beside Smithfield, with I-95 running between them, and the same mobile service reaches every street in town. This page is about getting the replacement right: the correct glass for your trim, what North Carolina says about tint on a new windshield, and how to look after the glass while the adhesive cures.

Auto Glass Raleigh is a mobile service of Impex Auto Glass. Impex has no shop in Selma; it sends a technician and the glass to you. The same visit can cover door windows and back glass, so anyone searching for auto glass in Selma, NC, for any pane of the car, is in the right place.

The right windshield for your exact car
Two cars of the same model and year can need different windshields. One trim has a tint band across the top and the other does not. One has a rain sensor or a camera bracket bonded to the glass, the other a plain mirror mount. Order by model name alone and the glass that arrives may not fit what is on your car.
That is why Impex uses VIN-based verification, checking the part against your vehicle identification number before anyone drives out to Selma. The VIN is printed on a plate on the dash at the base of the windshield, readable from outside, and on a label on the driver’s door frame. Have it ready when you send the quote form and the quote will be for the right part the first time.
OEM or aftermarket glass?
You will hear two terms. OEM glass is made for the carmaker and carries its markings; aftermarket glass is made by other glass manufacturers to fit the same opening. Impex supplies both OEM and high-quality aftermarket glass, explains the difference on its own windshield replacement page, and says its technicians can recommend the right option for your vehicle. Ask about it when you get the quote. If your insurer is paying, ask the insurer about it too.
Tint and a new windshield: what NC law says
If your old windshield had a tinted strip across the top, or you plan to add one, the rules are in G.S. 20-127. On the windshield, tint is allowed only along the top, down to five inches below the top or to the AS1 line marked on the glass, whichever is longer. A clear film that blocks ultraviolet light without blocking the view is allowed. Unlike the side windows, the windshield rule has no exceptions.
For the other windows the law sets total light transmission at 35 percent or more, with reflectance no more than 20 percent and no red, yellow or amber film. Two newer changes are worth knowing. Senate Bill 391, enacted as Session Law 2025-47, removed window tint from the annual safety inspection starting December 1, 2025, though the tint limits still apply on the road. And a new subsection, G.S. 20-127(g), says a driver with tinted windows must roll down the driver side window when a law enforcement officer approaches.
North Carolina also requires safety glass. G.S. 20-135 makes it unlawful to knowingly drive an NC-registered vehicle made on or after January 1, 1936 without safety glass wherever glass is used in its doors, windows and windshield. A windshield is laminated safety glass, and a replacement has to meet the same rule.
How a Selma replacement visit runs
- Tell us the car. Send the quote form or call with the year, make, model and VIN, and say which glass is broken.
- Agree the spot. Your driveway in Selma, your workplace, or another level place with room to open the doors.
- Take out the old glass. The technician removes the wipers and cowl, cuts the old urethane and lifts out the windshield.
- Prepare the frame. The surface the glass sits on is cleaned so the new adhesive bonds to a sound base.
- Set the new glass. A new bead of urethane goes down and the windshield is placed and centered in the opening.
- Refit and calibrate. The mirror, sensors, cowl and wipers go back on, and the forward camera is calibrated on site when the car needs it.
- Hand over. You are told when the car is safe to drive and how to treat the glass for the first day.
By Impex’s figures the windshield takes about an hour plus a short curing period, and most cars are on the road again within two hours. A camera calibration adds between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
Curing in damp weather
Rain and damp mornings matter to a windshield job. The adhesive that holds a windshield in place needs time to cure, and the Auto Glass Safety Council says the minimum drive-away time depends on the type and brand of adhesive and on the weather when the glass is installed. There is no single figure in the standard; the technician gives you the time for that adhesive on that day.
A garage or carport makes a wet day workable, because the glass and the frame must be dry when the urethane goes on. If rain is due and the car has to sit outside, tell Impex when you book so the visit can be planned around it.
The first 24 hours
- No car wash and no hosing the glass: Impex advises against washing the car for 24 hours.
- Close the doors gently. A slammed door pushes air against glass whose bond is still curing.
- Avoid rough roads where you can on the first day.

Selma, US 70 and the roads around it
Selma’s traffic comes from two directions. US 70 runs north-west toward Garner and Raleigh, and it is the road NCDOT’s Complete 540 project marks as future I-42 where the first phase of the new toll road meets I-40 and US 70; that phase, about 18 miles long, opened on September 25, 2024. I-95 runs north and south past the town, and south of Smithfield it is being widened from four lanes to eight, a 26-mile project that reaches the I-40 junction at Exit 81.
Heavy traffic and construction both put stones in the air. G.S. 20-116(g) requires trucks over 7,500 pounds that haul rock, gravel or stone to keep the load six inches below the walls and covered, because loose stone is a road hazard. A chip from one of those loads that you catch early may be repairable; once it has spread into a long crack, or out to the edge of the glass, it is a replacement, and that is the job this page covers.
Door windows and back glass in Selma
Not every break is a windshield. Impex replaces side windows and back glass on the same mobile visit. Impex says a side window takes 30 to 60 minutes and can be driven straight away. Back glass takes one to two hours, and you should leave the rear defroster off for 24 hours afterward.
Calibration after the new windshield
I-CAR lists removing the windshield among the events that may require the forward facing camera to be aimed again; that camera runs lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control. Requirements differ by vehicle, which is why the VIN matters here too. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site after the windshield goes in, both static and dynamic, without a separate dealership appointment.
Paying for it
Comprehensive coverage pays for glass breakage in North Carolina, less your deductible, and North Carolina has no law that waives the glass deductible. Some policies include full glass coverage, so check yours. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who does the work, and your insurer pays the same either way. Impex works with all major insurance providers. Our page on windshield replacement cost goes through the numbers in more detail.
Selma’s neighbors are covered the same way: windshield replacement in Smithfield across I-95, Benson and Four Oaks further south, and Zebulon up in eastern Wake. See all of them on the service areas page.

Questions drivers ask
Can I keep a tinted strip on my new windshield in NC?
Yes, along the top only: down to five inches below the top or to the AS1 line, whichever is longer, under G.S. 20-127. Clear UV film that does not block the view is also allowed.
Does Impex use OEM glass in Selma?
Impex supplies both OEM and high-quality aftermarket glass and says its technicians can recommend the right option for your vehicle. Ask which one your quote is for.
Can a windshield be replaced in the rain?
The glass and frame need to be dry, so a garage or carport helps. Tell Impex when you book if the car must sit outside and rain is due.
Is window tint still checked at NC inspection?
No. Session Law 2025-47 removed window tint from the safety inspection from December 1, 2025. The tint limits in G.S. 20-127 still apply on the road.
