Getting a Windshield Replaced at a Country Home Outside Raleigh

Much of the country east and south-east of Raleigh is not driveways and parking decks. It is gravel lanes, farm yards and homes set well back from the road around Zebulon, Selma, Four Oaks and Benson. A mobile windshield replacement works there too. It just takes a little more thought about where the car sits while the work is done.

Pick the right spot

A new windshield is set into a fresh bead of urethane adhesive, and the car needs to sit still and level while that happens. Look for:

  • Firm, level ground. A concrete pad, a paved apron or packed gravel is fine. Soft grass, mud or a slope is not.
  • Room around the car. The technician needs to open both front doors fully and work from both sides and the front.
  • Shelter if there is any chance of rain. The glass and the frame must be dry when the adhesive goes on. A garage, carport, machine shed or open barn bay all work.
  • Shelter from dust, too. On a dry, windy day a gravel yard throws grit. A building with the doors open is better than an open yard.

If none of that is possible at home, think about a different address: your workplace, or another lot where you have permission to leave the car. Impex’s service is mobile, so the visit goes where the car is.

Give clear directions

Rural addresses do not always map well. When you send the quote form or call, add anything that helps: the color of the gate, which building to pull up to, and whether there is a dog to keep inside. A phone number that works where you are is useful too, since signal can be patchy out of town.

Before the day

  • Find the VIN: it is on a plate on the dash at the base of the windshield, and on a label on the driver’s door frame.
  • Take a photo of the damage and send it with the quote form.
  • Have your insurer’s name and policy number to hand if you plan to claim.
  • Clear the dash and take down anything stuck to the glass, such as a phone or dash camera mount.

What happens on the day

Impex checks the glass against your VIN before the visit, so the windshield that arrives fits your trim. On the day the technician removes the wipers and cowl, cuts out the old glass, prepares the frame, sets the new windshield and puts everything back. On a car with a forward camera, Impex calibrates it on site after the glass is in; static calibration uses targets in front of the car, and dynamic calibration means a drive.

I-CAR notes that dynamic calibration can require roads clear of rain or snow, without heavy traffic or curves, at or below a certain speed for a set time or distance. Country roads with tight bends may not suit, so the technician may need to drive to a straighter road. Impex puts calibration at between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

How long before you can drive

Impex says a windshield takes about an hour plus a short curing period, and most cars are back on the road within two hours. The Auto Glass Safety Council says minimum drive-away time depends on the adhesive and on the conditions at the time, so the technician gives you the figure for that day. Cool, damp weather is a good reason to ask.

For 24 hours afterward, Impex advises against washing the car and slamming the doors. On a farm that also means not hosing the car down after a muddy run, and going easy on rutted lanes if you can.

Request a quote

Three short steps: the damaged glass, your vehicle and how to reach you. Impex Auto Glass comes back to you with a quote and a time for the visit.

When there is no one home

Impex offers no-contact service options. If you will be out in the fields or at work, ask about them when you book, and agree where the keys will be and where the car should be parked.

Questions drivers ask

Can a windshield be replaced on a gravel driveway?

Yes, if the ground is firm and level and there is room around the car. Shelter from dust and rain helps.

Do I need to be home for the visit?

Not always. Ask about Impex’s no-contact service options when you book, and agree where the keys and the car will be.

Why might the technician drive my car after calibration?

Dynamic calibration means driving at a set speed for a set time or distance. I-CAR notes it needs clear roads without heavy traffic or curves.
